Google has shown support for National Prescription Drug Take back Day. This day will occur on April 27th, from 10am-2pm. Google has provided locations for “save disposal” of prescription drugs. This is an effort to help prevent drug abuse. The official site for Take Back Day writes that a 2017 national survey of drug abuse revealed that “6 million Americans misused prescription drugs. The study show[ed] that the majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.” Google gives the specific percentage as 50% of those who abused prescription drugs found means through friends and family. Please consider finding Take Back locations or telling your friends and family to do such. Safely disposing of unneeded medication will help reduce abuse.
Aside from the fact a day like this exists, I wanted to bring this to the Soberocity community to show that a big company like Google is dedicated to helping the drug abuse crisis in America. I think it’s huge that a company with so much influence is on the side of trying to make a positive change. Millions of people use Google every day, heck, millions of people use google without even realizing it at this point to just find definitions or quick information. Google advertising this campaign helps spread awareness in an overwhelmingly positive manner. I hope that in the future Google continues to show support for movements like this, but also that other big-name companies or platforms also help. Educating and spreading awareness is a crucial step in reducing drug abuse and addiction. Below are links to both the Google Campaign and the Take Back Day site. Each also has videos and resources that can be used, as well as sharing Take Back Locations.
